Langtang Valley is the forgotten option. Closer to Kathmandu than Everest or Annapurna, shorter and lower than either, and dramatically scenic in a way that most first-time trekkers don’t expect until they see it. It’s also the region that got flattened by the 2015 earthquake — an entire village swept away by an ice-avalanche — and the trekking economy here is still rebuilding. Going is both an experience and an act of support.

This guide covers the standard 7-day valley trek, extensions to Kyanjin Ri and Gosaikunda, costs, the cultural context of the Tamang community, and why Langtang deserves more attention than it gets.

Route extensions
- Gosaikunda Lake (10-12 days): after Kyanjin, walk back down to Thulo Syabru, then up to the sacred Gosaikunda lakes at 4,380 m. Side option to continue via Laurebina La (4,610 m) to Helambu for a 14-day loop.
- Tamang Heritage Trail (10-13 days): alternative or extension through Tamang villages north and west of the main valley. Hot springs at Tatopani, lower altitude, cultural focus.
- Langtang + Gosaikunda + Helambu (14-17 days): the full regional circuit. Classic long trek that stays under 4,700 m the whole way.
- Ganja La pass variant (12-14 days): technical alternative crossing the 5,122 m Ganja La pass into Helambu. Requires mountaineering-lite gear and is genuinely serious.
The 2015 earthquake
On 25 April 2015, the magnitude 7.8 Gorkha earthquake triggered a massive ice-and-rock avalanche off Langtang Lirung (7,234 m) that destroyed Langtang village. Roughly 350 villagers and trekkers died. The village had been there for 400 years.
What you see today is a rebuilt Langtang Village on a slightly different, safer site. The rebuilding is mostly complete but still visibly in progress in some places. The trekking economy is substantially smaller than pre-quake — locals say visitor numbers are still at 60-70% of what they were in 2014. Going is both an experience and practical support.
The memorial stones and rebuilt monastery at the original Langtang village site are a stop on the standard trek. Your guide will give you the context. It’s one of the more profound stops you’ll make on any Nepali trek.

Wildlife
Langtang National Park has some of the best red panda habitat in Nepal — the bamboo forests between Lama Hotel and Langtang Village are prime. Dedicated red panda tours from Kyanjin Gompa with local trackers run 30-40% sighting rates over 3 days.
Other species you might see: Himalayan tahr, musk deer, Himalayan black bear (rare, larger body than the Terai sloth bears), langur monkeys, Himalayan monal (the iridescent pheasant).
Permits, costs, mandatory guide
Two permits: Langtang National Park entry (NPR 3,000 / $25) and TIMS card (NPR 2,000). Both issued in Kathmandu. Since April 2023, the licensed-guide requirement applies — no solo trekking.
Costs:
- Budget Nepali agency: $500-$800 for the 7-day version
- Mid-range: $800-$1,200
- International operator: $1,500-$2,500

Why pick Langtang
Langtang is the best trek for:
- First-time Himalayan trekkers nervous about altitude (caps at 4,000 m for sleeping)
- Anyone short on time (7 days vs 14 for EBC)
- Trekkers who want to avoid the crowds of Everest and Annapurna
- People interested in cultural tourism — Tamang villages are a distinct experience
- Return visitors who’ve done ABC or EBC and want something quieter
- Red panda spotters — this is the best Nepal region for it
Langtang is the wrong trek if you specifically want the 5,000 m+ experience (stick to EBC or AC), want the biggest peak views per dollar (Annapurna is more dramatic per step), or need the iconic-trek social credit (which EBC provides in spades and Langtang doesn’t).
For the broader Nepal trekking context see our full trekking guide. For the national park context see the national parks overview. And if you’re planning to combine Langtang with one of the other treks, see EBC or ABC.
