Rhino count in Nepal accomplished


 

Rhino count 2067 was started from Chaitra 22nd  and ended on 10th of Baisakh, 2068 for Chitwan National Park, Bardia National Park and Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve. 34 domestic elephants, and 170 people for Chitwan National Park, 14 domestic elephants and 74 people for Bardia and 4 domestic elephants and 22 people for Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve was utilized in the rhino count. Global Positioning system, binocular, camera were used in the count. Age and sex of the rhino and the status of invasive Mikania micrantha and human interactions were recorded along with the rhino. 503 rhinos (male 145, female 183, and 175 unidentified to the gender level) were counted from CNP (332 adult, 60 sub-adult and 111 calves). 24 rhinos (male 5, female 9 and 10 unidentified in gender level) were counted in BNP (15 adult, 4 sub-adult and 5 calves).  7 rhinos (male 2, female 2 and 3 unidentified to the gender level) were counted SWR (4 adult, 2 sub-adult and 1 calf).Compared to the 2008 count, 99 rhinos were increased, 95 (from 408 to 503) in CNP, 2 (from 22 to 24) in BNP and 2 (5 to 7) in SWR. The count was organized by DNPWC and supported by WWF Nepal and NTNC. Activity was supported by district forest offices, buffer zone management committee, Nepal army protect on unit in CNP, Nature guide association Chitwan and regional hotel association.
